Shreveport Job Corps Opportunity Center

The Shreveport Job Corps Center was established in 1979 in the historic Queensborough neighborhood of Shreveport, LA.  This bustling campus has about 250 residential students and 100 students who commute each day.  The Center Director is Lionel B, Fraser, III.  Training is offered in seven (7) vocational areas, including Business Office Technology, Carpentry, Culinary Arts, Facility Maintenance (HBI), Health Occupations, Painting and Welding.  Students who do not yet have a high school diploma are enrolled in a GED (high school equivalency) program along with their vocational training.  Students may also participate in an ACT program, to prepare for college enrollment at Southern University-Shreveport.  The highly successful School-To-Work program offers students practical hands-on training with companies in the local business community.  The center provides free transportation to and from town.  The many on-center recreational activities include supervised sports, movies, entertainment, mall visits and artistic activities.

What is Job Corps?

Job Corps is the nation's oldest and largest federally funded job training and education program for economically disadvantaged youth ages 16 through 24.  Established in 1964, Job corps has trained and educated more than 2 million young people to date, serving approximately 65,000 young adults each year.

While enrolled in the program, students receive housing, meals, basic medical care and bi-weekly living allowances.  Job Corps also has a strict Zero Tolerance policy for drugs and violence.  Since Job Corps is a self-paced program and lengths of stay vary, students may remain enrolled for up to two years.
